The Real Scoop
Children making icecream to be sold for

Read this:

July is National Ice Cream Month, begun by President Reagan in 1984. Ice cream, or “iced cream” as they called it back in George Washington’s time, has actually been around a lot longer than that: even 2,400 years ago the Romans would take ice that they schlepped down from the mountains (since they didn’t have fridges or freezers) and mix it with fruit. Thanks to electricity, getting ice cream is a lot easier now, and we can focus on the really important stuff – like what flavors go together best on a cone, and whether gummy bears will stick without sliding off.

Let's try out some math problems. Remember to continue to answer questions and complete tasks until you need adult assistance or you reach the end of your comfort zone. You may reach step 2, for some step 5 and for others you may go all the way. Each problem will present different challenges for each child.

It's a ZOO out there

Read this: July may be National Ice Cream Month, but this week is National Zoo Keeper Week.  What a great job: you get to hang out at the zoo every day, pet all those furry animals, and feed them without even having to stand in line.  Of course, the job also has its dangers, like possibly losing your hand when you try to feed the sharks!  If you imagine a typical day for a zookeeper, you see that the excitement could add up fast.

Running Your Mouth

Read All About it....

Even without scientists telling us, we’re pretty sure it isn't healthy to sit in front of a screen watching videos for hours and hours. But sometimes you want to watch more shows than you can fit into the time you’re allowed. It looks like grown-ups have this same problem, so some technology whizzes invented a way to watch videos faster. These software programs let you play any video 2 or 3 times faster, or even 5 times faster. In the old days if you sped up a video, the sounds turned high and squeaky and the people talking in it sounded like chipmunks. But the new technology doesn't do that – everything sounds just right. Your brain can still understand it, and you can watch the video in a lot less time! Normally people speak about 150 words in a minute, so doubling or tripling that speed adds up to a lot of talking in a short time.

Click on the blue link above to learn more about Words Per Minute @ WikiPediA

To experience a video that is playing up to 2 times faster, click below. The first 20 seconds is an introduction to how the specific app works. The second part of the video will give you an idea of how the video sounds and looks when sped up!

Read this:
Monterey Bay, on the beautiful coast of California, sits above a giant underwater canyon, or wide crack in the ocean floor. It gives sea life a wonderful safe spot to live, so all kinds of awesome ocean creatures live in the bay - whales, dolphins, sea lions, and all kinds of fish. Every spring even more animals move in, thanks to cold water rising up from the ocean floor.  More teeny fish move in, which brings in the bigger fish who eat them, then the seals who eat those fish, then whales who eat the seals. But this year the explosion of sea life is even bigger, thanks to strong winds and extra fish last year. It's such a boom that during class at Stanford University's marine lab there, a whole group of humpback whales will swim by and the teacher can't keep any of his students' attention - he just has to stop teaching and let the kids watch out the window until the whales swim away!
